Why Do Hearing Aids Need Repairs?

Hearing Aid Repair

Finding out that one of your hearing aids need to be repaired isn't great. You'll have to take it to be fixed and might have to pay for the repairs too. If you want to avoid hearing aid repairs, it's best to try to look after your hearing aids. Knowing the top causes of hearing aid repairs will help you to take proper care of them. There are some common mistakes that people make in the wearing and care of their hearing aids which can lead them to break. While hearing aids aren't too delicate, there are several things that can cause problems.

Improper storage

While you're likely to wear your hearing aids most of the time during waking hours, you shouldn't wear them all the time. There are times when you should take them off, including when you go to bed or go swimming. When you're not wearing your hearing aids, you need to make sure that you store them properly. If you don't, they can be affected by moisture, dust and the temperature. Avoid storing your hearing aids in very hot or cold places, or anywhere with lots of moisture, like the bathroom. It's also a good idea to leave the battery door open to allow it to dry out and prolong the life of your batteries.

Poor cleaning

Your hearing aids need to be cleaned to keep them working properly. They can get clogged up by earwax, dirt and dust. You should clean your hearing aids each day to keep them pristine. You can use a hearing aid cleaning kit to do so. You also need to make sure that you clean your hearing aids correctly if you want to avoid damaging them. Avoid using any liquids or anything that can damage your hearing aids. A clean, soft and dry cloth is usually enough.

Damage

One thing that you don't want to happen is to discover that you're dropped, stepped on or sat on your hearing aid. When this happens, it's unlikely you're going to be able to make a quick fix on your own. If you're lucky, it might have survived or perhaps on the case will be cracked. But you could easily destroy your hearing aid completely by damaging it in this way. If you want to avoid this happening, you need to be careful with your hearing aids. Don't leave them lying around and put them somewhere safe when you take them out.

Being worn when they shouldn't be

You need to be careful about when and where you wear your hearing aids. You can wear them most of the time, but there are times when you should take them out. Don't wear them in the shower, in a sauna or while swimming or they'll get wet. Don't wear them when blow-drying your hair, using hairspray or other aerosol hair products. Avoid moisture and heat that will damage them.

Take good care of your hearing aids, and you can avoid the need for repair. If they do need to be repaired, make an appointment with your audiologist.
